Configure how your members share

Set what your members share and how they share it. In this article, we will walk through the sharing widget options, how to edit your share messages, and review some additional sharing options to consider.

Open the share tab in the program editor to edit and customize your sharing experience.

Share Widget

Found in the Member Portal or embedded on your site, these are the sharing options you provide your members.

Email Form

Members can send emails, share via share buttons, or copy and paste their share link.

Select Customize Widget to set the share methods you'd like members to use. You can select up to six from the following options:

  • Facebook

  • X (Twitter)

  • WhatsApp

  • SMS

  • Email

  • Global Share

  • QR Code

You can also customize the text.

Standard Share

Members can share via share buttons (social media, text messages, email) or copy and paste their share link. This option gives the most selection for different share buttons.

Select Customize Widget to set the share methods you'd like members to use. You can choose up to four sharing options from each column (total of 12):

  • Social

    • Global Share

    • X (Twitter)

    • Facebook

    • QR Code

    • Pinterest

    • LinkedIn

  • Email

    • Gmail

    • Email client

    • Gmail

    • Outlook

  • Mobile

    • SMS

    • WhatsApp

    • Messenger

    • iMessage

You can also edit the instructional text that members see on the widget.

Direct Add

Members share by filling out a form that directly submits referrals to your program or copying and pasting their share link.

See Dirct Add Fraud Rules to limit the number of daily or monthly referrals that can be added via this method.

Select Customize Widget to edit the Direct Add form and copy. You can customize your widget text copy and the form fields that members can fill in. You can also add custom dropdown fields and text boxes if you'd like them to record additional info about referrals.

Social and Mobile Messages

Write templated messaging for your members to share via social media or text messages. These messages will appear when members select any of the share buttons. Open the share tab in the program editor to edit.

Design how the share link shows up when pasted on social media platforms and any application/website that supports link previews. Configure the:

  • Personal Message - needs to be less than 280 characters

  • Link Image Preview - recommend using an image with a 1.91 to 1 aspect ratio

  • Link Headline - message should be less than 125 (ideally less than 70)

  • Link Description - message should be less than 250

The Personal Message is not supported on Facebook or LinkedIn and will not appear.

Email Message

Write the templated email message for your members to share via the email buttons or send emails from the Member Portal. Use merge tags to personalize the message for your members. Open the share tab in the program editor to edit.

Be sure to include the {MEMBER_REFERRAL_URL} merge tag in the message (this is the member's unique share link for the referral to click on). If not included, it will be automatically added at the bottom of the message.

This is a plain text email. This restriction is due to how the email providers (i.e., Gmail, Outlook, etc) handle HTML and templated messages.

Additional sharing options

In addition to email, social media, text messaging, and the share link, Referral Rock offers Global Share and QR Code sharing.

Global Share lets the member share from any application installed on their device, including through Nearby Sharing.

QR code lets members copy or download a QR code of their share link. They can then pull up the QR code on their Member Portal for their referrals to scan.
