Customize the Sharing Experience

Configure how your members share

Overview

The sharing experience controls what sharing options your members see and how they interact with your program. You can choose the type of sharing widget, customize share messages, and configure additional sharing options like QR codes and Global Share.

What we'll cover in this article:

Before You Start

  • You must have an Admin or Manager role to edit sharing settings.

  • Sharing settings apply to all members in the program. They cannot be set per individual member.

  • To move a member between programs with different share settings, use the Member Migration feature.

  • For guidance on writing effective share messages, see Messaging and Brand Assets.

Where to Find the Sharing Settings

Programs > [Program name] > Open Editor > Share

Configure the Share Widget

The share widget appears in the Member Portal or when the member experience is embedded on your site. It determines how members share their referral link.

There are three widget types to choose from.

Email Form

Members can send emails directly, use share buttons, or copy and paste their share link.

Set up Email Form

  1. Select Customize Widget.

  2. Choose up to six share methods to display:

    • Facebook

    • X (Twitter)

    • WhatsApp

    • SMS

    • Email

    • Global Share

    • QR Code

  3. Edit the widget text as needed (under “Customize Email Form Widget”)..

  4. Select Save to apply your changes.

Standard Share

Members can share via social media buttons, email, or text message — or copy and paste their share link. This widget type offers the most share button options.

Set up Standard Share

  1. Select Customize Widget.

2. Choose up to four sharing options from each column (12 total):

    • Social: Global Share, X (Twitter), Facebook, QR Code, Pinterest, LinkedIn

    • Email: Gmail, Email client, Yahoo Mail, Outlook

    • Mobile: SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger, iMessage

  3. Edit the instructional text members see on the widget (under “Customize Social Widget”).

  4. Select Save to apply your changes.

Direct Add

Members share by filling out a form that submits referrals directly to your program. They can also copy and paste their share link.

Note: To limit abuse of this method, configure Direct Add Fraud Rules to cap the number of referrals a member can submit per day or month.

Set up Direct Add

  1. Select Customize Widget.

  2. Choose up to six additional share methods to display alongside the form:

    • Facebook

    • X (Twitter)

    • WhatsApp

    • SMS message

    • Email

    • Global Share

    • QR Code

  3. Under Language and Share Settings, edit the form text and share copy.

  4. Under Referral Form Fields, select which default form fields to show or hide:

    • Full Name

    • Email

    • Phone

    • Company

    • Referral Address

    • Referral City

    • Referral Region (ex. state/province)

    • Referral Postcode/ZIP Code

    • Referral Country

    • Member Note

  5. Optionally, Add Custom Form Fields (dropdown fields or text boxes) to collect additional referral information.

  6. Select Save to apply your changes.

Note: The fields listed above are built-in and do not require custom fields. Simply show or hide them as needed.

Disable the Share Link on Direct Add

If you want members to submit referrals only through the form (without a shareable link):

  1. Select Customize Widget.

  2. Under Share Widget, deselect the Copy Link button.

  3. Make sure all other share methods are also turned off.

  4. Select Save.

Edit Social and Mobile Messages

Write templated messages that members use when sharing via social media buttons or text message. These messages appear automatically when a member selects a share button.

Set Up Social and Mobile Messages

  1. Go to Programs > [Program name] > Open Editor > Share.

  2. Edit the following fields:

    • Personal Message — keep under 280 characters

    • Link Image Preview — use a landscape size image (1200 x 628), or an image with a 1.91:1 aspect ratio (recommended)

    • Link Headline — keep under 125 characters (ideally under 70)

    • Link Description — keep under 130 characters

  3. Select Save to apply your changes.

Note: The Personal Message is not supported on Facebook or LinkedIn and will not appear on those platforms.

Edit the Email Message

Write the templated email that members send when using the email share buttons or sending emails from the Member Portal. Use merge tags to personalize the message.

Set Up the Email Message

  1. Go to Programs > [Program name] > Open Editor > Share > Email Message.

  2. Write your email subject and body.

  3. Include the {MEMBER_REFERRAL_URL} merge tag in the body to insert each member's unique share link.

  4. Select Save to apply your changes.

Note: If you do not include {MEMBER_REFERRAL_URL}, it will be added automatically to the bottom of the message.

Note: Share emails are plain text only. HTML formatting is not supported due to how email providers (Gmail, Outlook, etc.) handle templated messages.

Additional Sharing Options

In addition to email, social media, and text messaging, two extra share methods are available to add to any widget.

Global Share

Lets members share from any application installed on their device, including through Nearby Sharing.

QR Code

Lets members copy or download a QR code of their share link. Members can display the QR code on their Member Portal for referrals to scan in person.

FAQ

Can sharing options be set differently for individual members?

The share widget type (Email Form, Standard Share, or Direct Add) is set at the program level and applies to all members in that program. It cannot be customized per individual member.

If you need a member to use a different share type, move them to a different program that uses the desired widget. Use the Member Migration feature to do this.
